Electric Bikes vs Electric Scooters in 2021

Electric bike vs electric scooters in 2021

Fun Personal transportations options are here! When I was a kid growing up in the 90’s personal transportation meant by foot, regular bike or if you were cool a skateboard while rocking Jinco jeans. Today kids and adults have a pleather of options for personal transportation. For instance, electric bikes (e-bikes) and electric scooters (e-scooters) are becoming more mainstream.

Benefits of personal transpiration

Avoiding traffic, Having some drinks (responsibly) and getting some fresh air are all reasons to get a e-bike or e-scooter. They are fun as heck to ride and depending on where your going can get you their faster then by car or public transportation.

As a bonus note you will also be contributing to global warming/climate change/el nino (in Chris Farley’s voice… in Spanish means the nino) or whatever the current term is being used. These electronic personal carriages burn clean and use no carbon emissions. So put that on your resume for your next interview.

E-bike or E-scooter is the question

Depending on your location restrictions and personal needs the question of e-bike or e-scooter will be answered. Are you going to be using it for your main transportation to get around or is it for recreational use? Are you living the big city life or living in the suburbs? Do you space to store it? Do you live in an apartment on the 3rd floor that would require transporting up the stairs with no elevator?

Weight Difference

Most scooters come in under 30 pounds in both its single and dual motor versions and can easily be folded and stowed in a closet or carried onto public transportation. E-bikes, on the other hand, can weigh anywhere from 50 to 100 pounds.

Speed and Range

Most e-scooters tend to top out at speeds of 22 mph, where e-bikes may reach speeds of up to 30 mph or more. But if you are riding in heavy traffic or on crowded city streets, speed may not be the concern but rather nimbleness. In the US, e-bikes are usually limited to either 20mph (Class 1 and Class 2) or 28mph (Class 3). In Europe, most e-bikes are limited to 25 kph or 15.5 mph

E-scooter advantages

If your ideal mode of transport is weaving through the traffic, traveling light, and having the option to easily grab a taxi or hop on a bus or train, a lightweight folding e-scooter should be the clear choice. E-scooter tend to be less expensive as well. The average e-scooter is around $300.

E-bikes advantages

If you plan on using an electric vehicle to do your regular shopping or move kids from place to place, there is no better choice among the range of options than a heavy-duty e-bike with a large rack, extra seating, and cargo capacity. If you want to pound the pedals and get a workout on your commute, a lighter-weight e-bike might suit you best. From comfortability to versatility. Most e-bikes have large frames and larger than normal bike tires to accommodate the added weight of the battery and motor. Electric mountain and hybrid e-bikes also include full or partial suspension systems, that come in handy on bumpy, potholed city streets as well as trails. E-bikes will range from a low of $600 to over $8000. Not many quality e-bikes can be had for under $1000, with most mainstream e-bikes costing between $1500 – $4000
